Betta splendens

Siamese Fighting Fish · Chapter 01 — Fish Species

Care: EasySize: 3"Lifespan: 3–5 yr
Temperature
76–82°F (24–28°C)
pH Range
6.5–7.5
Hardness
3–15 dGH

Despite their reputation as aggressive fish, Betta splendens thrive in carefully chosen community tanks. The key is eliminating visual triggers: avoid fin-nipping species (tiger barbs, serpae tetras), remove tankmates with flowing fins, and break line-of-sight with dense planting. A 10-gallon minimum with floating plants like Salvinia gives them the surface access they need — bettas are labyrinth fish that breathe atmospheric air, and stressing their path to the surface causes real harm.

Water temperature is more critical than commonly assumed. Below 74°F, immune function drops noticeably — fin rot and velvet become far more likely. Keep the heater consistent; daily swings of even 3–4°F will stress the fish more than a slightly elevated nitrate level ever would.

Full entry includes: tank mates guide, breeding protocol, disease susceptibility chart, and feeding schedule.

Every one of the 200+ species entries is written to this standard.
